В июле прошлого года состоялась российско-американская экспедиция на один из самых древних (39 млн. лет) метеоритных кратер на Земле - Попигайский, расположенный чуть южнее Таймырского полуострова и получивший свое название по имени реки, в том районе протекающей. Организовали экспедицию американский ученый и писатель Рой Талант и российский координатор международных программ КСЭ Екатерина Россовская. Это была их седьмая совместная экспедиция в России к местам падения известных метеоритов: Тунгуска, Сихотэ-Алинь, Чинге, Паллас, Царев и Первомайский Поселок. The expedition is being organized by Dr. Roy Gallant (Southworth Planetarium) and Russian colleague, Ekaterina Rossovskaya. The pair have organized, six expeditions over the past six years: Tunguska, Sikhote-Alin, Chinge, Pallas, Tsarev, and Pervomaisky Poselok.
Optimum time for the expedition would be 15 days, timed about the last week of July and the first week of August. The Popigai crater is located in north central Siberia above the Arctic Circle northeast of the most northern Russian city of Norilsk, about 4 helicopter hours away from Khatanga. The crater is some 80 or so km in dia. Until fairly recently, the Popigai crater was presumed to have been volcanic in origin, but the Russian investigator Massaitis has shown that it is an ancient impact crater.

The group would fly to Moscow and remain there overnight for 1 day of sightseeing, then from Moscow a 5 hour or so flight to Krasnoyarsk. West Coast participants might want to fly westward directly to Krasnoyarsk. A day or two in Krasnoyarsk to sightsee and rest. Then a flight north to Khatanga and overnight there. Then a helicopter flight to the Popigai crater. Camping out for the next several days, with visits to an old diamond mine, gulag camp, and hear lectures about Popigai and other impact crater sites in Siberia. Four days or so rubber rafting along the Popigai River, which runs all the way through the crater, camping all the while. There would be a cook and assistant(s). Also an armed guard against bears. After the river rafting the helicopter would pick up the group on the far side of the crater. Back to Krasnoyarsk, then to Moscow and home. Затем было много сборов и много нервов, причем с обеих сторон - и американской, и российской. А завершилось все радостным воплем Кати: «Мы все-таки сделали это!» И радоваться было чему. Несмотря на все злоключения эпохи позднего перестроечного периода в России, 9 американцев и 9 россиян дружно преодолели все возможные препятствия необычного приключения по маршруту: Красноярск - Норильск - Хатанга - Попигай и обратно, о чем и свидетельствует их довольный вид на общей фотографии.
